On 26 January, Anonymous Malaysia posted a video as a message to the government of Malaysia. In the 2 minutes and 29 seconds long video, they said that the Malaysian government is unwilling to recognise and learn from their past mistakes.

Subsequently, the National Security Council (MKN) released a statement soon after saying they take the threats posed by Anonymous Malaysia to hack government websites seriously. MKN even issued a warning to all government agencies to take necessary steps which can prevent and minimise the impact of such an attack.

Yesterday (3 February), Anonymous Malaysia took to their Facebook page to showcase some of the websites that they have allegedly hacked into. They wrote, “Today, the DarkArmy Crew sent us pictures of two government sites and four educations sites.”

They allegedly managed to hack into websites of the Johor government, the Ministry of Health, Politeknik Melaka, Politeknik Ungku Omar, Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Regarding this issue, CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab said cybersecurity threats are being continuously monitored and kept under check in Malaysia thus there is no need for the public to feel anxious or panic over the matter.

However, they advised that Internet users should be more responsible for protecting themselves against these threats, reported Bernama.

“CSM offers various cybersecurity services in the ‘responsive’ and ‘preventive’ context to prevent data leakage and protect data security through the strengthening of ICT security systems.”

He added that if users are faced with such threats, they can reach out to the Cyber999 Help Centre by lodging a report via email at cyber999@cybersecurity.my or by calling 1-300-88-2999. Intellize Tech Services chief strategy officer Dr Kavita Muthy even added that cyber threats could be as serious or even more serious than the Covid-19 pandemic as it could also lead to people losing their lives and businesses, besides impacting the economy.
