IKEA will discontinue its printed catalogue that spanned for seven decades due to plummeted demand.

“It’s time to say goodbye to the IKEA catalogue”, the Swedish giant is turning the page after 70 years since the very first 16-page long catalogue in 1950.

According to The Guardian, the improved edition of catalogue in 1951 featuring a brown upholstered rocking chair on the cover page had around 285,000 copies distributed in Southern Sweden. When IKEA’s catalogue was at its highest performance, it was even said to have a greater circulation than the Bible.

People nowadays turn to the online world to seek gratification as well as shopping, thus the decision to end the production of the catalogue is also a part of IKEA’s aim to become more digital. According to CNA, IKEA’s online sales increased by 45 per cent for the past 12 months until the end of August this year.

In Malaysia, the IKEA catalogue has also been a huge part of IKEA’s presence. Although the catalogue will not be joining IKEA’s future journey, IKEA currently still has the final edition of the catalogues available in its stores or on its website.

This feels like the end of an era, will you miss flipping the pages of IKEA printed catalogues?
