It seems like even a pandemic with cases rising every day will not stop the political turmoil in our country. Yesterday (13 October), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that he has the support of 120 Parliamentarians and that it would be “appropriate” for current PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down.

In retaliation, the PM said that while Anwar has been busy going to Palace, he has been busy fighting the pandemic. Amongst all this, UMNO’s Secretary-General Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said in a statement yesterday that the party is seriously considering withdrawing their support from the Perikatan Nasional government.

If the PN government wishes to continue their political support with UMNO, new conditions will have to be accepted which will be set in a written agreement and to be accepted as soon as possible. The statement also added that UMNO will be suggesting to the Muafakat Nasional (MN) steering committee that MN be registered immediately as a legitimate political coalition.

The MN coalition consists of UMNO, PAS and also PPBM (Malaysian United Indigenous Party).

The statement was issued after the party’s Supreme Council political bureau meeting held last night at PWTC and was chaired by party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“UMNO will continue to fight for the interests of the people to make sure the Covid-19 pandemic will be handled by the government effectively for the welfare of the people and the country.”

UMNO believes that political stability is vital and economic growth must be enhanced. They also said that any decision UMNO takes is for the benefit of the people, religion, race and country.
