Covid-19 numbers are slowly on the rise and another wave has been predicted, yet it seems that Malaysians believe they’re invulnerable to the virus.

After all, restaurant owners don’t seem to be taking physical distancing very seriously and their customers don’t seem to mind.

For example, the Info Roadblock JPJ/POLIS took to their account to showcase images from a restaurant in Indera Mahkota, Kuantan, where the authorities had to intervene after the eatery (nor their customers) showed no compliance for any Covid-19 safety measures.

The restaurant, which is a favourite among locals, has since been ordered to close.

Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) Head of Public and Corporate Relations Section, Norkamawati Kamal said that the closure of the restaurant was made under Section 46 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171). The MPK enforcement inspection found that the restaurant failed to ensure that customers complied with standard operating procedures in terms of physical distance and placed tables and chairs on public roads.

“The owner of the premises involved has been fined RM500 and the confiscation of equipment such as tables and chairs placed on the road was done immediately,” he said.

MPK and their efforts to enforce physical distancing in Kuantan have been the talk of the town on social media as they’ve been seen actively making rounds and issuing fines when a wrong-doer is spotted. As of last night (6 August), MPK has issued over 1,500 compounds.

“MPK will not compromise with any business premises owners who violate the SOP. This effort is made to curb the spread of the coronavirus,” he added.

Hence, Kuantanites, wear your masks properly and make sure your customers are practicing physical distancing or the MPK will come for you.

Stay tuned for more updates.
