Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the movement of stranded higher education following the announcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) will begin Monday night 27th April 2020 for those currently staying in campuses in the central zone.

Ending the line of questioning by the Malaysian public urging the government to devise a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and send them home, the recent announcement is surely one that will be a huge relief to stranded students.

However, the move to send students home is only applicable to those living in Covid-19 green areas.

“If their homes are in Covid-19 red zones or under the enhanced MCO, they will not be allowed to return home.”

“If they have relatives who live in Covid-19 green areas, they will be allowed to go and stay with their relatives until their hometowns are declared disease-free.”

Ismail Sabri also announced that students stranded in red zone areas will undergo a swab test to detect Covid-19 infection, and will only be allowed to go back if their homes are in the green zone.

Currently, Malaysia’s green zones have gone up to 67 districts with no new red zones reported since last week, showing that there is a positive trend of recoveries outnumbering new cases daily.

Let’s hope that our students make it back to their homes safely after being stranded in their dormitories for such a long time.
