During the Covid-19 daily briefing hosted by the Ministry of Health yesterday (24 April), Director-General of Health Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced that Malaysia has successfully flattened the peak of the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr Noor Hisham explained that Malaysia was predicted to observe the peak of the confirmed Covid-19 cases on 14 April, and that the total number of cases would shoot up to 6,300 nationwide. However, according to the recorded data, the highest daily rise in new cases occurred on 3 April, which had recorded 217 cases that day.

“If we look at our data, we had 217 new cases on 3 April. That was the highest daily rise we had ever since. We expected cases to peak on 14 April, so much so that the prediction was there would be 6,300 cases in the country.”

Considering how Malaysians had been wondering about the situation of the curve that we were told to help flatten by complying with the Movement Control Order (MCO) since 18 March, Dr Noor Hisham revealed the good news that the peak is “behind us”.

“But we did not see that peak, which means in the first two phases, we have successfully flattened the peak. The peak is behind us.”

According to The Star, he further explained that Malaysia is currently undergoing a recovery phase and he hoped that the progress could continue its momentum so that Malaysia could keep the Covid-19 cases under control.

“What we are going through now is a recovery phase. We hope we can continue this momentum and keep our cases under control,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

However, in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the country, Malaysians were told to not let our guards down. Dr Noor Hisham also mentioned that we should really continue to comply with the MCO measures like how we did during Phase 1 and 2. He had also warned that complacency among Malaysians may create a new wave of infections.

“It is important for us to continue doing what we managed to achieve in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the MCO.”

In regards to Phase 4 of MCO that was announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin via a televised broadcast, Dr Noor Hisham agreed that the government’s move will allow more opportunities to prevent and control the spread of the coronavirus.

“This move will provide the government with further opportunity to prevent and control the spread of Covid-19 infection more aggressively, prior to a re-evaluation of the effectiveness and current Covid-19 situation in the country.”

“The ministry will continue all measures, as well as intensify efforts to further reduce the number of cases through a targeted approach.”

“Such measures can be implemented more effectively under the MCO as well as the enhanced MCO,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

We’re glad to hear such good news ever since the outbreak began in Malaysia! But, Dr Noor Hisham was right, we should not get ahead of ourselves just because there’s positive progress in ceasing the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia. Keep staying at home to save lives, guys.
