The demand for face masks has skyrocketed amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order (MCO). Unfortunately, the nation is currently experiencing limited supply of face masks, and what we have is unable to meet the demands of Malaysians.

To overcome this, the government has decided to intervene and play their part. The Star has reported that the government will distribute free face masks as part of its contribution to the people in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin explained that the process of getting the supply of 10 million face masks from China is still ongoing. Once the supply has reached Malaysia, it will be distributed for free to all Malaysians who are in need of it.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) under the direction of our Prime Minister will look into this matter and ensure that the face masks are brought in as soon as possible.

“This is the government’s contribution to all at a time of crisis,” he said after chairing the Economic Action Council meeting, today (March 23rd 2020).

In regards to the new ceiling price of face masks, The Star reported that the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has been asked to review the matter to see that the price is not fixed too high.

The new ceiling price for face masks is RM2 per piece. Prior to this, it was 80 cents per piece.

The new ceiling price for face masks has brought in complaints from various parties stating that the price is too high. Following this, the government responded that they would look further into this matter.

“At a time of crisis, the price should not be too high. I hope manufacturers will continue to produce the masks and also agree to a reasonable price,” said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
