Amidst all of the frustration, anger and sadness that this Covid-19 season has caused our country, it’s reassuring to know that kindness will always prevail.

A group of refugees from Syria, Palestine, Yemen and Iraq recently made headlines when they pooled their money together to buy supplies and cook food for the Ampang Hospital medical workers who have been working around the clock to battle against the viral outbreak, following sources from the Star.

“The doctors, nurses and everyone in hospitals are doing so much hard work to keep us safe. This is the least we can do for them,” said 62-year-old Palestinian Eman Mfleh, who started the initiative by cooking fried noodles for the staff.

Having lived in Malaysia for the past five years with her husband, daughter and four grandchildren, Eman’s gratitude comes as a token of appreciation for the way she was received into our country: “this is an opportunity for me to give back to Malaysia who have welcomed us warmly. We love this country and the people.”

The initiative, which sees the collaboration of refugee organisation, the Al-Hassan Volunteer Network and non-profit, Beyond Borders Malaysia will see through the delivery of cooked food for 20 people to the hospital starting today (23rd March) until the end of the MCO (31st March) with a different chef taking up the position each day.

Beyond Borders founder, Mahi Ramakrishnan said: “it’s their [the refugees] way of contributing back to the country and society. They also want to show their gratitude and appreciation to the medical workers who are putting their lives at risk for us.”

We could all learn a thing or two from these refugees, who still provide to those in need even though they themselves don’t have much to give. What do you guys think of this?
