As the Covid-19 novel coronavirus continues to besiege the world, many countries have already started taking measures to ensure that their own citizens do not succumb to the highly virulent infection that originated all the way in Wuhan city of Hubei province in China. However, it would appear that many of us have severely underestimated how quickly transmissible the virus really is.

Just recently, Italy had officially declared a state of emergency (January 31st 2020) after Covid-19 cases were found to have been sharply rising, according to The Star. However, it seems that despite the quick motion to impose a lockdown, it has done little to keep infections at bay.

In a recent update from The Guardian, it has been revealed that in just the span of three days, Italy has now recorded over 223 cases of positive Covid-19 coronavirus patients, with seven people already dead from the infection.

To combat this, over 11 towns in Lombardy and Veneto have been put under a quarantine lockdown of 15 days while Italian authorities race against time to find means to control and treat the rising number of Covid-19 patients at hand. According to the Washington Post, new cases of positive Covid-19 coronavirus patients are being recorded nearly every hour.

Given that metric, this makes Italy the worst hit country in Europe to suffer from the Covid-19 epidemic, and the third worst hit country in the world, following China and South Korea.

Over 50,000 people living in these quarantined towns have been told to stay at home and avoid social contact, while schools, shops and businesses – apart from chemists and some supermarkets – have been closed.

As the Covid-19 novel coronavirus continues to loom as a global threat, we should do our part to ensure we’re practicing all the necessary hygiene habits to stay clean! And for Italians battling this crisis, we hope that you will come out of it with a clean bill of health!
