Ever since the internet has brought entire malls to our doorsteps with e-commerce apps and websites, we can basically shop online for apparel and groceries, and then sit back and wait for our goodies to arrive at our doorstep. In just a few taps or clicks, people can now purchase even furniture and vehicles from online platforms, which is why we have a growing addiction to online shopping.

This online shopper surnamed Zhu, from Fujian Province in China, has been banned by Taobao after he made the purchase of an expensive watch and immediately requested for a refund.

It can be seen in the screenshot that Zhu had immediately bought and paid for an expensive watch costing 32,999 yuan (RM19,462) on 29th December 2019 at 8.48am.

However, as soon as he realised he had indulged his bad habit of purchasing without thinking carefully, he then asked for a refund within one minute after the purchase was made. It was his request for a refund that got his account banned from purchasing any item from Taobao until 1st January 2999!

The reason behind the ban is because “his account has abused membership rights such as purchasing goods, applying for refunds, and lodging complaints. This has lead to violation of legal rights and interests of others, and obstructing Taobao’s operating order. Therefore, Taobao has restricted the account’s purchasing rights.”

Zhu defended his action of requesting for refunds because under Taobao’s agreement, users have the right to a refund before a purchase is delivered.

“Even my ashes will be long gone before I get my account back,” Zhu complained.

Nevertheless, we should always think wisely before making any purchase. You should seek help if you think you’ve become a shopaholic.
