A convocation is one of those events where everyone in the family will be present and it was the same for Ummie Syuhada Ismail!

Ummie, a UPM graduate, told Mstar that she knew her grandparents were coming to her convocation but did not expect to see them wear clothing with their ethnic Kenyah patterns! It was their little surprise for their eldest granddaughter!

If you didn’t know, the Kenyah are an ethnic group in Sarawak, and are found in Baram, Bintulu, and Miri among other areas!

She said that they did it because she’s the first grandchild to graduate, so they wanted to make it a tradition for future celebrations.

Ummie revealed that her parents were supposed to wear traditional patterned clothing as well, but they did not manage to change into their finery because there was a long queue in the bathroom.

The clothes were made by Ummie’s aunt using kain batik pua kumbu for her convocation ceremony. She also embroidered Ummie’s baju kurung with beads!

Ummie said that everywhere she went, people complimented her on her baju kurung. There were even a few people who wanted to take pictures with her because of her unique clothing!

Ummie graduated with a degree in Mathematics and said that wearing the baju kurung (which represents her family’s ethnicity) made her feel very proud. She’s also happy that she was able to educate people on the existence of the Kenyah people.

Congratulations on graduating, Ummie! Good luck in your future endeavors!
