Foreigners working in Malaysia is nothing new and some of them have been so successful that they can open their own businesses here. However, it will be harder for them to do so, especially in Selangor.

The Selangor government, through the municipal council, has informed that business licences for small to medium enterprises will not be given to foreigners, reported Sinar Harian.

The exco for Local Government, Public Transportation and New Village Development, Ng Sze Han, said the licence will be discontinued if locals were found to have transferred ownership of their business permits to foreigners.

“This is in line with the circular from the Chief Secretary of the Housing and Local Government Ministry, Issue 3 Year 2008 where the issuance of permits for small to medium enterprises by the municipal council is only allowed for Malaysian citizens and the owner of the permit must be at the business location at all times,” he said.

“However, the municipal council will issue business licences to foreigners who have registered their companies with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) and they have to provide an original passport and have a business visa,” he added.

According to Ng Sze Han, the municipal council will also have routine inspections to reduce the cases of renting business licences or night market spots to third parties.

“If a business licence holder or night market spots are found to have broken these conditions, the municipal council will take action by either issuing a fine or cancelling the licence and confiscating the licence,” he added.
