Take note, everyone!

According to The Star, seasonal fruit vendors in Penang will need to apply for a license to sell fruits, especially those who sell durians. Penang City councillor Wong Yuee Harng shared that permit will be valid until August 2019. He was quoted as saying,

“We urge traders to submit their application for our consideration. Enforcement action will be taken against those who operate without a permit.”

Wong revealed this during a press conference which took place at the city council’s licensing department in Jalan Padang Kota Lama on 17 April 2019.

Some of the conditions for setting up a temporary seasonal fruit store includes abiding by the approved structure size for the stall and appointing someone to manage traffic if absolutely necessary. Wong continued,

“No foreigners are allowed to operate the stall and traders are not allowed to use polystyrene to pack or display the fruits.”

Not only that, the stall operators must ensure that they manage their waste in an orderly manner by providing an appropriately sized rubbish bin on site.

That said, the temporary licence costs RM1 daily for every 40sq ft the traders use. On top of that, the operators will also have to pay RM6 daily for rubbish cleaning by the council. Other than that, Wong noted that a canopy fee, which is a one-off payment, varies according to square feet and the charges are as mentioned below:

  • RM100 – 400 sq ft and below
  • RM200 – 400-800 sq ft
  • RM300 – 800-1200 sq ft

Seasonal fruit sellers who would like to acquire the license can do so by submitting their application at the MBPP (Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang) licensing department. Or you could just call 04-2592020.
