To all environmentalists out there, here’s some good news for you!

LED lamps will soon be implemented on roads all across Malaysia to replace the traditional light bulbs in an effort to save up to 50% energy. Currently, almost 80% of streetlamps nationwide use other kinds of lighting as opposed to the more environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient LED lights.

According to The Star, Housing and Local Government Minister, Zuraida Kamaruddin, said that this new plan will take effect in stages starting September 2019.

“We can save about 50% from current energy expenses with this move. The ministry will also look into having illuminated signs on shops and buildings changed to LED lighting as well,” she said, adding that this move will create a more beautiful and attractive urban landscape for Malaysians.

A pilot project will be conducted in Zuraida’s constituency in Ampang first, which will commence in June after the process of getting contractors.

“We will then carry out the pilot project for three months. If all goes according to plan, we can expect to implement this on a nationwide basis in September, in stages,” she said.

Meanwhile, Zuraida said that they will soon be installing CCTV cameras at hotspots to prevent crime and to catch those who litter.

“I will also start this in Ampang first before extending it to the whole country. Aside from curbing crime with these CCTVs, we also want to stop people, be they Malaysians or foreigners, from littering,” she said.

Yay, to a cleaner and safer Malaysia! What do you think of these new implementations? Let us know in the comments below!
