In this day and age, getting the most likes and shares on social media so that you can go viral is one of the foremost things on everyone’s minds. In fact, some of these people would often do absurd things or start crazy trends in order to be viral and popular on social media.

However, sometimes people may go a little too far.

According to South China Morning Post, Chu, 29, was a frequent livestreamer who wanted to become an online celebrity. His gimmick was that he would drink anything that was requested by his audience for three months, which included alcohol as well as any other liquids.

Unfortunately, Chu passed away on New Year’s Eve after a livestream that went horribly wrong.

Chu record himself every day via the Liaoliao app, drinking various drinks across several locations. He made his last online appearance on December 31 where he drank alcohol in a supermarket in Dalian, China.

An anonymous friend of his said,

“He drank beer and other things without taking a rest, not even for a day.”

“He died not because he drank that day, but because he had done so for three months.”

His friend also mentioned that Chu once drank cooking oil in hopes that he would get more money that day.

Besides that, his friend also recalled an instance where Chu pushed himself to the limit in order to earn an extra RM300 from a livestream. He said,

“In one video clip, he sat there telling people he couldn’t do it anymore. He was twitching but people still asked him to continue.”

On the night of his death, Chu was taking a taxi home after drinking in the supermarket. The driver, who noticed that Chu wasn’t feeling well, started to worry about his condition and brought him to the hospital instead. Unfortunately, Chu was declared dead on arrival.

Ever since the news of his death got out, the app has ceased all of its livestreaming functions and has blocked access to his videos. A notice on the website said,

“In response to the country’s Internet Clean-Up 2019 Initiative, we have launched a self-inspection. All videos have been shut down until further notice.”

It’s not worthwhile to lose your life just so you can gain more followers. Please take your health into consideration before doing anything extreme. RIP, Chu.
