It looks like our airports will be getting an upgrade in security checks pretty soon!

According to Yahoo News, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will be installing X-ray machines and scanners in KLIA and KLIA2’s security checkpoints during the second half of 2019.

Referring to what Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Mokhtar Radin had brought up in Parliament in 2014 and most recently last year, the Transport Minister was quoted by The Star as saying,

“Reporters covering Parliament will know that there is this funny guy from Sabah’s Kinabatangan who uses the word ‘raba-raba‘ each time he passes through the airport.”

“So there will be no more ‘raba-raba‘ at the airports when new X-ray machines are installed by the second half of next year.”

Airports in the United States have installed similar machines in the past, one example being the Backscatter X-ray that can scan through a person’s clothing to detect any possible contraband being smuggled. However, these scanners were removed from many airports in 2013 to protect the privacy of travellers.

It is unclear whether the same type of X-ray machines will be installed in our airports.

What do you think about this step in our airport security screening procedure? Will it make travelling more secure? Let us know in the comments below!
