Co-working spaces are popping everywhere these days and it’s no different here in Malaysia. We are seeing a lot of new ones emerging but Nomad Malaysia is the new kid on the block that is bound to have people talking, especially with their interesting form of payment.

The co-working space located at SS18, Subang Jaya is the result of the hardwork of Tan Sung Lin and his wife, Gladys Tan. At 26 years old, Sung started up Nomad Malaysia after being inspired by his own working life.

Having previously worked remotely for a company dealing in education and games, he experienced the difficulties of finding a comfortable working space for himself. He shares,

“I’ve been staying in Subang probably all my life and I realised that there’s this problem. There isn’t really a space that you could work at in this area. I found myself cafe hopping and going to shopping malls but I realised that there isn’t a conducive place. A place where the Wifi is good, the seats are comfortable.

Plus, it doesn’t really help you to work, especially when these places get busy and you gotta leave because you only ordered one drink.”

He was at a crossroad, deciding on whether he wanted to work for another company or start something of his own. At the end of the day, the couple took the risk and started their own thing – Nomad.

If you step into Nomad Malaysia, you’ll be greeted by a space that’s modern, minimal and decluttered with touches of Japanese and Scandinavian influences. The space itself is meant to help you focus and the couple have put in a lot of work into ensuring that not only it is functional but also comfortable. So much so that they ended up going to hundreds of different furniture shops to source for their decor.

Sung has even sat in a chair that they were looking at purchasing for a whole day to make sure that it would be good enough for the customers! And yes, they did end up buying that chair.

Their facilities consist of:

  • High speed Internet
  • Office supplies
  • A lounge to relax at
  • Fixed desks
  • Shared desks
  • A meeting room

Oh, did we mention there’s also unlimited coffee and tea to keep you going while you work? Its strategic location also means there’s ample parking spots available or you can even take the train.

The fixed and shared desks are charged per month and there are different rates for students as well as workers.

Seek proper business advice from a consultant for free

Another cool perk that is offered at Nomad Malaysia is that you also have the opportunity to seek proper business advice from a consultant for free. He’s based at the co-working space for now and offers his services to any individual or company who may need it. Regardless of whether they are MNCs, fintech or start-ups, anyone can just head there and talk to him.

They are also planning to work with Befrienders KL in conjunction with Mental Health Day and Sung has even offered the space for free to them anytime they’d need it, as he believes that the life and love that can be seen at Nomad Malaysia will have a positive effect.

Exercise as payment?

What really sets this place apart from the rest though is that they are the first co-working space in the world to accept exercise as a form of payment. Pretty cool, right?

Sung hopes to inspire more Malaysians to be active through this method. As he puts it, “To ignite a little bit of a spark for them to realise that actually, it’s not that hard to include exercise as part of their day.

There are 2 different challenges that people can take up, which entitles them to different rewards.

  1. To get RM5 off the daily pass price: 20 squats, 20 sit ups, 20 push ups, or a 1 minute plank.
  2. To get RM10 off the daily pass price : 3 minute plank, 3 minute squat and hold, or 100 push ups or 100 sit ups.

AirAsia’s CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes even replied to an email Sung sent in conjunction with their #DareToDream campaign and he is just waiting for Tan Sri to drop by so he can make him one of his special hand-grinded filter coffee. Maybe even take up one of the challenges perhaps?

Whether you’re curious and want to check out the space or maybe want to see what this exercise challenge is about, you can drop by Nomad for yourself.
