Recently, Malaysians were outraged when news of Datin Rozita Mohamad Ali escaping a jail sentence surfaced. The light sentence was given despite the brutal abuse of her former maid, 19-year-old Suyanti Sutrinso.

Initially charged with attempted murder, Rozita had her charges reduced to voluntarily causing grievous hurt and was let off without a jail sentence and a good behaviour bond of RM20,000 for five years.

In light of this sentence, over 60,000 Malaysians who believe that the sentencing was unfair, have since signed a petition calling for justice to be served. This has surpassed the petition’s initial goal of 50,000 signatures.

As a result of the mass public outrage, the Shah Alam High Court reportedly fixed an application to review the Datin’s sentence today (21st March).

However, according to the Malay Mail Online, the 44-year-old Datin and her bailor were unable to be located on the day of the review.

Selangor prosecution head Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad reportedly told the judge that he and his team went to two homes listed to Rozita in Petaling Jaya and Melaka, but found both homes to be vacant.

He added,

“We also went to (the) address of the bailor. First there were problems and then we entered the home, and the bailor’s home was empty.”

The 19-year-old maid reportedly suffered injuries to her head, hands, legs and internal organs after her former employer abused her with a kitchen knife, steel mop, clothes hanger, and umbrella.

Despite the severity of the abuse, Rozita managed to escape jail time after her lawyer successfully applied for the good behaviour bond, saying that his client had repented.

Whatever it is, let’s hope that she shows up in court soon and faces the music!
