From luxury gifts to fancy dinners, a birthday is 1 of the best times for couples to show their love and affection towards each other. Sometimes, appreciation words about how much you treasure a relationship/marriage are more than enough as a priceless gift.
In a heartfelt birthday post last night (May 1), Dato Lee Chong Wei took a trip down memory lane and reminisced about the good ol’ times with his wife, Wong Mew Choo before they were married. It was Mew Choo’s birthday, and the post was dedicated to his wife.
“If I can turn back time, I won’t change anything”
In his post, Chong Wei hinted that he was not really an academic person back at school. While others brought pens and books, he brought a pillow to sleep on in class and would only borrow some pens and papers from Mew Choo when needed, who was seated in front of him.
“I would kick her chair to get her attention.”
The relationship wasn’t easy in the beginning due to the objections from Mew Choo’s family, but just like Chong Wei’s dedication to the sport, that did not deter his will to approach her.
Chong Wei asked Mew Choo to be his girlfriend when she was sitting for her SPM, and during that timeline, Chong Wei was already playing at the World Youth Championship.
“I would wait for her at the staircase area at our hostel to talk to her. I would grab her hand to run up the stairs when we hear outsiders coming in the staircase area,” Chong Wei explained.
Before the lovebirds tied the knot, their relationship was a secret for 8 long years. He did that to protect her from media and family pressure. Now that they’re married with 3 kids, everything is nothing but a sweet memory of how far they’ve come.
Despite the hardships, the badminton legend admitted that he will never change anything he has done for her, even if he could turn back time.
“Because I love her so much, truly. I will hold her hands till the end of time. Happy birthday my one and only love, Mew Choo.”
“You’re forever 20 to me, and you’ll always be the little princess to the kids and me.”
