Although the next general election is scheduled to take place next year, many have claimed that there is a real possibility of it taking place sometime this year instead.

Despite the annual upcoming floods having the potential to possibly derail GE15, some politicians believe that the show must go on despite the potential tragedy.

Recently, UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the BN Youth machinery is ready to proceed despite the floods which are predicted to occur at the end of this year.

Zahid said that if GE15 is destined to be held at the end of the year, even though several states are often hit by floods during that period, the youth machinery of the political coalition is still ready to weather it.

“We know there are constraints, at the end of this year there will be floods, there will be heavy rain, there will be northeast monsoons, but if the Prime Minister dissolves it during the flood season, we are willing proceed through the floods,” he said when he launched the BN Youth Machinery at Titiwangsa Stadium.

The UMNO President also said that he was confident that BN was capable of capturing Putrajaya in GE15 based on the spirit of the political coalition’s youth with the help of the Wanita and puteri machinery.

His comments sparked outrage

Zahid’s comments did not go down well with Malaysians who condemned him for prioritising politics over livelihoods and lives.

Many users called him out as insensitive for wanting to proceed with the election no matter how bad the floods have the potential to be.

“People lost HOMES and even family members. Could you not politicise natural disaster? Don’t you feel bad for those who are badly affected,” commented a user.

Meanwhile another described the trauma of a flood victim and said, “To some the floods are a disaster. To some (the rich) it’s nothing.”

One user shared an image of last year’s floods of people having to sit on top of their roofs just to stay away from the water.

“Now imagine we have to go through that and line up to cast our vote. What about those that are stuck on the roofs of their houses, how do they do it?”
