On 25 August, an 11-year-old student passed away after allegedly being made to take part in an 80-metre running trial for her school’s sports programme.

The father of the late Nur Qaira Alisha previously took to social media, claiming that a teacher had instructed his daughter to join the activity despite the school having received a medical letter confirming her heart condition, with his post quickly going viral.

Teacher believed to be involved in Nur Qaira’s case has been transferred

Following the incident, Nur Qaira was reportedly left bedridden and required oxygen support before she passed away.

Earlier today, we reported that the teacher believed to be involved in the case had been transferred to another school while investigations are ongoing.

The Kedah State Education Department (JPN) said the transfer was made shortly after the initial investigation as an early intervention measure.

Nur Qaira’s passing has also deeply affected many netizens, with some sharing suggestions on how similar incidents could be prevented from happening to other students in the future.

Different-coloured name tags for students

According to influencer and former teacher Mohd Fadli Salleh, following the tragic death, many netizens suggested that students with medical conditions should wear different-coloured name tags.

He explained that when a student has a hospital letter confirming their health condition, usually only the class teacher and Senior Assistant for Student Affairs (PK HEM) would be aware of it.

“The class teacher would then inform the subject teachers teaching that class. However, teachers often rotate, and when a teacher is absent, another teacher may have to take over their class. This means a teacher who has never taught the class may not know that a student has a health condition and should avoid strenuous activities,” the post read.

Fadli said that having different-coloured name tags could make it easier for new and substitute teachers to quickly identify students with health conditions who are unable to take part in strenuous activities.

He also pointed out that new teachers or those who have just been transferred to a school may not be aware of the health conditions of every student they teach.

“The same could happen when a substitute teacher steps in to cover for a teacher on maternity leave, as they may not be informed about certain students’ health conditions. After all, some schools have thousands of students.

“So, I think the suggestion from netizens for students with health conditions to wear different-coloured name tags is a good one. It would make it much easier for substitute, relief and new teachers to identify students with health conditions.”
