In recent times, we’ve seen numerous cases of wild animals entering public spaces most likely due to a loss of habitat resulting in desperation.
From a tapir in hotels to elephants breaking into homes, there appears to be no end to the matter.
Recently, videos which had been circulating on social media showed a black bear running away from members of the public who were trying to capture the bear.
In the incident which was reported to have happened in the paddy fields of Kampung Selengkoh Tengah, Kedah, a small black bear was seen running away from a number of men who were trying to capture it with a rope.
In a report by Berita Harian, it was reported that a member of the Auxiliary Fire Brigade (PBB) from the Yan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was injured on his left wrist after he was mauled by the bear in the paddy field.
Yan BBP chief, Assistant Fire Superintendent Norhamidi Ali, said that the firefighter who was identified as Mohd Nizam Hamid, is currently being treated at Yan Hospital due to serious injuries.
Norhamidi said that his party received a call regarding the presence of a bear in the area at 10:15am today (February 2) before rushing to the location.
“The bear is believed to have come from the nearby forest of the village. The operation was also assisted by members of the Yan Civil Defense Force (APM) and villagers who chased the bear and tried to catch it.”
He explained that while in the process of catching the animal, Mohd Nizam is believed to have fallen which is when the black bear pounced and bit him before running away.
So far, Mohd Nizam’s condition is reported to be stable and he has undergone x-ray treatment.
Norhamidi stated that his party is currently waiting for a report from the doctor regarding the injuries he suffered and it is likely that he will be sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) in Sungai Petani.
“Currently the operation is still going on to locate the bear which is believed to be still there,” he added.
