A policeman from the Philippines was seen brutally killing an unarmed mother and son by shooting them to death. The incident was caught on camera late Sunday in the Philippines and has made many netizens from all over the world to question the rampant abuse of authority by police under the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte.
In the video, the suspect, Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca, was seen dressed in plain clothes, arguing with a mother and son in Tarlac, a province around two hours north of Manila.
The video was recorded by a witness, Alyssa Calosing, showcasing Nuezca pulling out a pistol and shooting a mother, Sonya Gregorio, 52, and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio,25, as they held on to each other tightly.
In a radio interview, police chief of Paniqui said the two parties were involved in a property right-of-way dispute, but the shooting incident stemmed from the firing of a PVC cannon, also known as boga, by the Gregorios.
“The suspect went there to confront them, then the issue of right-of-way cropped up and the shooting incident happened. The suspect’s anger was apparently triggered by the confrontation between his daughter and the older Gregorio,” he said.
According to The Washington Post, Nuezca’s daughter, a minor, was also present and seen in the video walking around before telling Sonya to let her son go.
“My father is a policeman!” the girl yelled.
“I don’t care!” Gregorio yelled back.
“You son of a wh*re. Do you want me to finish you off right now?” the cop said.
He then shot them both as many witnesses screamed in terror in the background.
Alyssa Calosing, one of the witnesses explained that Nuezca hit Gregorio beforehand and that people there were crying and appealing for him to stop.
She also said after shooting the mother and son, Nuezca left with his daughter.
“They walked off like it was nothing… I felt I was numb like my soul left my body. Then when I felt something move, I began jumping in anger and crying,” she said.
As reported by CNN Philipines, about an hour after the incident, he (the suspect) surrendered at the Rosales Pangasinan Municipal Police Station. The suspect also turned over his PNP-issued 9mm semi-auto pistol that was used in the crime.
PNP Region 3 Chief BGen. Val de Leon said two charges of murder will be filed against the cop as the Department of Interior and Local Government assured a thorough, impartial, and swift investigation.
No bail was recommended, said de Leon.
