A woman in Uttar Pradesh, India may have to spend the rest of her life living with HIV after her in-laws allegedly used an HIV-infected syringe on her.
The woman, Sonal tied the knot with her husband, Abhishek in February 2023. Her father gave the groom’s family 1.5 million Rupees (approximately RM76,000) and a car as dowry.
However, the dowry was not enough and the groom’s family demanded more – a bigger SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) and an additional 2.5 million Rupees (approximately RM126,000) – which the bride’s family didn’t fulfil.
Soon after the wedding, Sonal’s nightmare began.

She suffered mental & physical abuse
According to reports by Times of India and The Hindustan Times, Sonal was humiliated and her in-laws also threatened to get their son a new wife. She was kicked out of the house one month later and stayed with her family for the next three months.
However, the village chief in Abhishek’s area intervened, and Sonal was sent back to her husband where the trauma continued.
Abhishek’s family allegedly tortured Sonal mentally and physically, and administered “random medications” using an HIV-infected syringe in May 2024.
Her health deteriorated
Her health deteriorated very quickly and her family brought her to the hospital for a check-up where she received the terrifying news that she was HIV-positive.
Sonal’s family took legal action, and her father told the court that the police allegedly did not take the report seriously. The case has now been registered against four people, including Sonal’s husband and her brother-in-law.
The matter is being investigated under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, and under provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
