Two air conditioning maintenance workers were recently fined for causing a public disturbance at a Songkran festival held at a shopping mall last week.

According to the New Straits Times, Ng Boo Sheng and Ch’ng Jin Wei pleaded guilty to the charges before magistrates Farah Azura Mohd Saad and Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha.

Ng was fined RM350 or 10 days in jail, while Ch’ng was fined RM300 or two weeks in jail. Both paid their fines.

Men

The incident occurred around 11 pm on April 20 at the mall in Bandar Utama, where the two were accused of causing a nuisance that could annoy the public.

Under Section 268 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 290, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM400.

The case came to light when a video of the ruckus went viral on social media. The festival saw several men exchanging blows and throwing chairs.

Fight

The video then caught the attention of the police. Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja’afar reported that five people were arrested following the incident, believed to have been sparked by festival-goers rushing to refill water guns.
