In a report by Harian Metro, 25 imams in Perlis were recently fired, while 10 more were ordered to be transferred to other areas in the state on Tuesday (1st January).

The order was sent out in a letter dated 31st December 2018 by the Perlis State Islamic Affairs Division (JAIPs), terminating the imams effective 1st January 2019. However, no clear reason for the termination was given and there was no reference number displayed.

According to a source, the imams who were affected by this order did not encounter any problems and got along well with all members of their respective areas.

The source also told the daily that the reason why JAIP relocated 10 imams and fired 25 other imams was because they were regarded as inconsistent and incompatible with the practises of the state. On top of that, the source also added that the imams who were sacked are advised not to take any action that would bring a bad name to Perlis’ religious authorities.

“Currently, it is understood that a number of mosque committee members have also resigned their posts to protest the sacking of the imams,” the source was quoted as saying.

Despite the advice for those affected not to take action, this issue will be brought to the state government level due to the amount of dissatisfaction with this sudden decision.
