Recently, news broke out about a local university professor who is under fire for allegedly sending nude photos to a student.
The news went viral after a student organisation at the university took to its Instagram page to urge the educational institute to demonstrate its commitment to combating sexual violence by taking action against the professor.
Following public outrage after the matter, Universiti Malaya (UM) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said that there will be no compromises for sexual harassment offenders.
In a report, he stated that the university takes the issue of sexual harassment seriously and will ensure swift action against offenders, regardless of their position or status.
“We at the university have been informed of the case involving a professor currently being investigated by the police. We are prepared to provide our full cooperation to the authorities to assist in the investigation,” he said.
“As a public institution, UM will not compromise in safeguarding the safety and welfare of students, staff, and the entire campus community.”
“However, we must comply with all laws and regulations when addressing each complaint to ensure that it is handled fairly and equitably. We will continue to ensure that the university environment remains safe, fair, and conducive for all,” he added.
Prof Noor Azuan then said that anyone with information – especially victims – should come forward to help resolve the issue immediately.
Ministry of Higher Education is investigating the case
Additionally, the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), in a statement today, said the university is adhering to all relevant procedures and regulations in addressing the matter.
“UM has specific guidelines and regulations regarding sexual harassment and is taking appropriate measures to protect the rights of all parties involved,” the statement read.
It said the individual linked to the allegation has filed a police report, and the authorities are conducting their own investigation.
“MOHE and UM will not tolerate any breach of the law, and strict disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty.”
