A Singaporean man was fined RM1,500 and ordered to perform 4 hours of community service by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court after he was caught discarding his cigarette butt on the ground during the New Year’s celebrations in Bukit Bintang earlier this year.
Should he fail to pay his fine, he faces a prison sentence of 1 month.

Singaporean man fined RM1,500 and ordered to undergo 4 hours of community service for littering in Bukit Bintang
The accused was charged with violating Section 77A(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672), which is punishable under Section 77A(2) of the same Act or under Section 77B(1) of the same Act.
According to a report by China Press and The Straits Times, the 25-year-old ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge without appointing a lawyer. He then made a plea to the judge that, as a Singaporean, he had never littered in such a manner before.
However, as he did not see any rubbish bins at the scene, he threw the cigarette butt on the ground after noticing other cigarette butts littered there.
“In Singapore, we learn not to throw cigarette butts on the floor. In the early morning, I did not see any dustbins. I saw cigarette butts on the floor, so I chose to throw mine on the floor,” he stated.
