Nine years ago, a young man shared a simple video of himself cooking in his rented home, unsure if anyone was watching at all.
The camera, the kitchen, and those early moments weren’t about fame, they were about passion, curiosity, and the joy of making delicious food. Today, that quiet beginning has blossomed into something extraordinary. Beloved Malaysian cook and content creator Khairul Aming looked back on his journey and the incredible community that has grown alongside him.

The massive changes over the years, from classmates to those who are no longer here
In his heartfelt Threads post, Khairul highlighted how what began as a personal project transformed into a shared experience that connected him with people from all walks of life, from friends he made during his student days to fans who are now building families of their own.
“Some of you were my classmates, now you’re working. Some were single, and now you’re married. Some are parents. And some have already left us,” Khairul shared.
Khairul also reflected on how special it feels to see people cooking his recipes with their loved ones. He added that although he can no longer create those moments with his late father, watching others laugh, cook, and celebrate together brings him immense happiness.

“When I see you happy, cooking with your family, that means the world to me,” he said.
From Malaysia to kitchens across the globe, his message was one of gratitude. “Thank you, guys, for everything,” he concluded, a reminder that what started with a lone cook in a small home eventually grew into a global family bound by shared meals, memories, and love.
After nearly a decade of trials and errors in the industry, Khairul’s restaurant Rembayung opened its doors on 6 January and has been receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback — not just for the food, but also for its warm hospitality.
