Kedah-based influencer Faiz Soul has broken his silence regarding the viral controversy surrounding his RM10 ‘Caramel Cheese’ donut. He expressed surprise that the issue only surfaced a year after he first launched the business.

Malaysian social media users were recently baffled by the pricing, with many arguing that RM10 is too steep for a single donut. While Faiz acknowledges that consumers have every right to choose whether to purchase the product, he has made one specific request to his critics.

“Don’t insult me or the food. Don’t claim the food contains pork when you haven’t even bought it. Don’t berate or defame me by saying I’m doing this just to get rich. I am only trying to help someone,” he stated.

A mission to support colleagues

In a post on Threads last night (26 February), Faiz explained that while he previously focused on selling drinks at his booth, the donut was originally sold by a colleague who could no longer continue the business due to personal matters.

Faiz expressed his own confusion as to why the donut, which has been on sale since May 2024 without issue, has only recently drawn such scrutiny.

He revealed that he chose to incorporate the donut into his menu, which he launched just two weeks before Ramadan this year, to create job opportunities for his colleague’s staff.

“My colleague is also able to earn an income to support her children through this,” he added.

Faiz also apologised for being unable to please everyone, particularly those who feel the product is overpriced. However, he maintained that he will continue to operate the business without making any changes to the product or its current pricing.

Crowds persist at his booth, despite pricing backlash

In his latest update, Faiz expressed gratitude for the large crowds still visiting his booth. He revealed that while his team had prepared numerous trays of donuts for the night, they were left with only one by the end of the shift.

He noted that the surge in customers actually followed the viral pricing controversy and thanked those who have continued to support him throughout the ordeal.

For a donut with a slice of cheddar cheese on top, glazed with caramel sauce, what do you think of the RM10 pricing?
