Instances of bullying has increased in schools all over the world. In Malaysia, there have been instances where it has even led to death as well as the involvement of Ministers.

However France has taken an innovative step forward in ensuring that school bullies get punished for their actions.

According to The Guardian, the French parliament has voted to make school bullying a criminal offence punishable by up to 3 years in prison.

The proposed law was supported by education minister, Jean-Michel Blanquer, who said that the law will send a strong message to society that “we will never accept the lives of our children being shattered”.

As many as 1 in 10 French children are affected by bullying, as social media platforms increase the potential for public taunting and humiliation.

“The draft law is a way of enforcing the values of the republic”.

This new law is expected to be adopted in February, and will mean that France would have some of the harshest penalties for bullying IN THE WORLD.

The new crime of ‘school bullying’ will apply to all children and adults in schools and universities, including students as well as staff. It would carry a maximum 3-year jail term and a fine of up to €45,000 (RM214,551).

Meanwhile, if a victim of school bullying kills themselves, or attempts to, the maximum penalty could rise to 10 years and €150,000 (RM715,149).
