You’re not Malaysian enough if your love for Roti Canai isn’t there. We can safely say that it’s a global favourite, especially after it has been ranked 2nd in the best street food in the world by Taste Atlas.
Roti Canai is a pan-fried flat bread served with the choice of dhaal, curry or both, depending on your preference. And as Malaysians, we have it ALL the time. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, no problem!
In case you’re wondering which street food has been crowned the champion, Guotie is ranked the best street food of all by Taste Atlas.
Originating from China, Guotie is a pan-fried dumpling that is crispy on the bottom. Guotie, which also means “potstickers” is sometimes mistaken as Gyoza, the Japanese dumpling. But there’s a simple way to differentiate those 2. Gyoza is smaller in size and can usually be finished in 2 bites. Guotie, on the other hand, has a slightly bigger size than Gyoza.
After Roti Canai, Southern Spain’s Espeto comes in the 3rd, which is skewered fish and sardines are traditionally used for Espeto. The list then continues with Mexican Taco and Carnitas, a braised pork dish. You can refer to the list of Top 50 Best Street Food in the World below.

On the other hand, Banana Fritters, fondly known as Pisang Goreng has also been crowned the champion in the list of Top 50 Best Deep Fried Desserts in the world. The snack is not popular in Malaysia but also in Indonesia and Brunei.
However, the snack is credited to Indonesia.
How do Malaysians react towards Roti Canai and Banana Fritters making it to the list?
Unsurprisingly, many Malaysians are glad to see Roti Canai being ranked 2nd in the list and took the opportunity to express their love towards the food.
On the other hand, some Malaysians are not really fond of the idea that Banana Fritters are credited as an Indonesian dessert.
One netizen joked that the snack can only be credited as a Malaysian snack if it comes with cheese.
Just last year, Roti Canai was ranked as the world’s best street food, but this time, it sees a drop in ranking.
