A local Malay drama, “Bidaah,” recently caught a lot of attention for the wrong reason. In one of the controversial scenes, the heroine of the drama, who was on the bed, touches a man’s beard with her feet.
The scene did not sit well with many viewers, especially when the episode was released in Ramadan. The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has since broken its silence and said the viral scene is NOT in line with Islamic teachings.
In its official statement, JAKIM said the agency had summoned the production company for a meeting with members of its Islamic Media Review Committee to review the content of the series, including controversial segments and episodes that have not yet been aired.
JAKIM also stressed that any artistic work should comply with Islamic teachings and should not cause misunderstanding or defamation of Islamic teachings.
“Islam does not reject art, but rather sees it as a way to express the beauty bestowed by God and spread its teachings.”
“However, Islamic art must abide by the guidance of Shariah and convey positive energy, rather than promoting content that goes against Islamic values and morals,” they added.
JAKIM explained that the 2015 Guidelines for Review of Broadcast Content with Islamic Elements should be the main reference for all broadcast industry stakeholders.
“The Islamic Development Authority is always willing to work with artists and creators to produce beneficial content, but only by ensuring that it complies with religious guidelines.”
The producers, in the meantime, are willing to accept criticism and have promised to delete any scenes that are not suitable for public viewing.
