Malaysian singer Mimi Fly recently released a Raya song titled Serumpun but the music video gained widespread attention for Mimi’s off-shoulder outfit, which is known as “Berkemban” in Malay. In the video, other dancers in traditional Malay outfits were seen dancing along with Mimi.
Mufti of the Federal Territory, Datuk Prof Madya Dr Luqman Abdullah, commented on the video clip of the Raya song and said that Mimi’s outfit was not appropriate, especially for the festive season celebrated by Muslims, reported The Merdeka Times.
“Aidilfitri in Islam is about glorifying Allah as well as expressing gratitude to Him.”
“Singers and artists should use the creative skills that Allah has bestowed upon you to guide people toward goodness, rather than directing them toward actions that go against the very purpose of Aidilfitri.”
Dr Luqman also advised the local talents not to ruin the glory of Aidilfitri.
Serumpun’s music video had been taken down following Mufti’s advice, but Mimi did not take it personally.
In her Instagram post @mimiflyyy this morning (March 19), Mimi explained that she accepted the criticism with an open heart.
“Since my music video was released, I have received a lot of feedback from fans and music listeners.
“Some are positive and some are worried that my artistic approach is being interpreted differently and deviates from my true intentions.”
Mimi said that she took down the music video of Serumpun following the message from Mufti, and in return, re-uploaded an edited version of the MV this morning, in which her shoulder was covered.

Mimi also assured the public that as a Muslim, it was never her intention to insult her religion and culture.
She also said that the song was composed on her own and was inspired by the diverse cultures in the archipelago over the centuries, and apologised for the misunderstanding.
“As an artist, I always want to ensure that my work is accepted and of good quality and gives it meaning.”
