Riangkan Raya: 5 Simple Ways M’sians Can Spread Kindness This Festive Season!

Ramadan is over, having brought a celebration of many virtues including reflection, gratitude and spreading kindness. But there’s always time to spread kindness after Ramadan and during Raya, kan? So this time around, why not spread even more kindness? Consider the following ways to spread even more positivity this Raya — because making someone smile is the best kind of sedekah (charity)!

1. Keep others’ loneliness at bay during Raya

While Raya is about togetherness, some would find that a few of their elderly neighbours, distant relatives or isolated community members spend the festive season alone. A 30-minute visit from you can go a long way to make someone feel valued and connected, turning their Raya from somber to joyful!

2. Volunteer at a shelter or bubur lambuk/soup kitchen

Raya is not a feast-filled occasion for everyone. Underserved communities including the homeless, refugees, or low-income families may struggle for basic meals. So, why not volunteer so that everyone gets to celebrate?

Your time and effort will provide nourishment and relief, showing that Raya’s blessings are shared with all.

3. Clean up your local mosque or surau

Post-Raya prayers can be a messy affair. Go grab some friends or relatives and help clean up the houses of worship! A clean space respects the sanctity of worship and eases the burden on staff who may get overwhelmed during the bustling season.

4. Donate clothes and essentials

Many families can’t afford new Raya outfits or basic necessities. Contribute as much to donations as you can to help them celebrate with genuine joy! Your donation could provide someone’s first new Raya outfit in years, easily boosting their confidence and making kindness even more contagious.
