It takes blood, sweat & tears to get our hard-earned money at the end of every month, but it only takes minutes for scammers to take away what belongs to us.

Scammers are known to steal the identities of others and convincingly play the part. Recently, a netizen took to her Twitter account to share her experience of how she was deceived by a scammer who pretended to be the owner of a house.

The user, Qisthina was looking for a room to rent and she became JUST the victim that the scammer was targeting.

She had found the room for rent in Bangsar, KL via the Mudah platform where she reached out to the owner of the house who said that her name was Ana. She then asked for Ana’s basic details before moving towards the deposit part.

Qisthina had asked Ana earlier if she could view the room prior to making any agreements, to which the latter convinced her by saying that deposits are required as the room is in high demand.

As she was desperately looking for a room to rent, she decided to pay the deposit of RM900 upfront despite feeling suspicious.

On the day of the viewing (12 June), Ana sent Qhistina the location of the house and they both set the appointment at 5:30 pm.

However, Qisthina started to feel something was off when Ana did not show up at 6pm. She texted the latter to ask if she was coming, to which she did not reply.

After nearly 2 hours, Qisthina said that she will be making a police report where Ana would be made responsible for the deposit that she had requested for.

In another tweet, she said that the RM900 may not be a huge amount to some people but it’s definitely a struggle for people who have just started to work. She then sent a message to other scammers out there.

“Please know that karma is always around the corner.”

We would also like to remind everyone to be extra cautious and alert especially while making online payments. Have you ever encountered a scam incident while doing online transactions?
