“RM48.70” – Penang Restaurant’s ‘Expensive’ English Breakfast Goes Viral, Manager Explains Price

If you have the habit of cafe hopping every now and then, chances are you’ve tried different versions of English Breakfast at different places. While the prices and the taste may not have much difference, a restaurant in Penang recently went viral for its English Breakfast.

In a public Facebook group, a netizen shared the receipt of his meal – a plate of English Breakfast priced at RM42 and after adding taxes, the total bill amounted to RM48.7o. While the netizen did not outright complain about the food or the price, he simply asked the netizens about their thoughts on the price.

“The food and the bill. What do you guys think?”

The English Breakfast comes with,

  • 2 pork sausages
  • 3 strips of bacon
  • Toast and butter
  • Beans, cherry tomatoes, and Shimeiji mushrooms

“Why is it even viral?”

Following its circulation, China Press contacted the said restaurant and spoke to the manager, who clarified and said that the prices for ALL items are stated on the menu.  The ingredients, too, were displayed in the description.

The manager also said that the customer should be aware of the prices prior to making his order, and he was baffled about the food going viral online.

“Each pork sausage costs me RM7, and each strip of bacon costs me RM2,” the manager explained his costings.

For that price, the manager also said the English Breakfast comes with unlimited tea or coffee every day, until 11:30 am. Early-bird visitors (8 till 9 am) even get a 20% discount.

“If the customer had any feedback, he could’ve told us on the spot. We always welcome feedback for our improvement.”
