Penang has recorded a sudden increase in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, with 579 new cases reported in the 15th epidemiological week (April 6 to April 12), as compared to the 226 cases the previous week.
According to a report by Kosmo, Penang State Youth, Sports and Health Exco, Daniel Gooi, shared that the cases showed a 156.2% increase following the recent Aidilfitri holiday celebration.

“During the same period, 4 new clusters were also detected. However, all cases were lightweight and only needed outpatient treatment,” he said, adding that, so far, no patients have serious complications or need intensive treatment.
Where are these cases from?
“As of April 12, 4,585 HFMD cumulative cases have been recorded in Penang, which is drastic as compared to just 879 cases for the same period last year,”
“Seberang Perai Central recorded the highest number of cases with 1,362 cases, followed by Seberang Perai Selatan with 884 cases, Timur Laut with 852 cases, Barat Daya with 845 cases and Seberang Perai Utara with 642 cases,” he added.
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is common in children under 5 years old, but anyone can get it. While it is not serious, HFMD is highly contagious.
To prevent it, one must always wash their hands, clean and disinfect surfaces as well as avoid contact with patients.
