PAS’ Dr Halimah Ali recently came under criticism for retweeting a quote linked with Nazis.

The Kapar MP tweeted a supposed quote on propaganda by Adolf Hitler.

“If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed,” read the quote along with a Hitler picture in the background.

The quote is popularly linked with Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels. However, historians have noted that there is no actual evidence linking Goebbels with the quote.

According to the Jewish Virtual Library, though it is claimed that Goebbels coined the concept of the “Big lie,” there is no proof that Goebbels uttered the exact line.

So, it is safe to say that the whole concept of the Big Lie was just a tool of propaganda rather than a direct quote by Hitler or Goebbels.

Backlash from netizens

Despite the criticism she received, the tweet has not been deleted. As at press time, it has garnered over 108,100 views.

“Damn are you proud that you’re quoting Hitler? This is scary tbh.”

One user stated, “This is (the) one guy you don’t want to quote… but this is PAS so no surprise.”

“There are numerous Muslim scholars in modern history who can be cited. But you just showed your true hardline extremist colours by referencing one of the most wicked people on the planet,” commented another netizen.
