Over the weekend, news of a teenage model’s sudden death shocked KL-ites.
The victim, 19-year-old Ivana Esther Robert Smit, who is of Dutch-Belgian citizenship, was found dead at the balcony of a sixth floor unit at a condominium at Jalan Dang Wangi.
The model was believed to have fallen from the 20th floor after a night of drinking with the owner of the condominium unit and his wife, who are American and Kazakhstan citizens respectively.

“After that, the three of them came back to the condominium before the couple went to their room and Ivana rested in the hall,” a source told the New Straits Times.
“However, Ivana, who was in the nude, was believed to have walked to the balcony and fell over. She crashed through an awning of a sixth floor unit.”
According to Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaharuddin Abdullah, the case has been classified as sudden death and found no criminal elements. He has also encouraged anyone with additional information relevant to the case to come forward to the police.

Meanwhile, Ivana’s father reportedly flew to Kuala Lumpur to identify his daughter’s body, according to Dutch news outlet, AD News.
Her father has expressed suspicions about the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death, saying that although she was tall (181cm), the barricade at the balcony she reportedly fell from was 120cm tall. Therefore, an accidental fall could be unlikely.

The model’s father also allegedly pointed out that he saw bruises in the shape of fingers around her neck.
Frustrated with investigations, Ivana’s parents have since contacted the Dutch embassy in efforts to get Interpol to conduct an investigation of their own.
Whatever the situation, we hope the authorities thoroughly investigate this case. Our condolences also go out to Ivana’s friends and family. No one should have to go through such a tragedy.
