The weekend is where everyone unwinds and relaxes after a hectic week. However, during the MCO, even weekdays seem to have the weekend vibes. But, just because the weekend came, that does not immediately mean free movement amidst these critical times.

The Malaysian Government has strictly warned all citizens to avoid unnecessary movements and continue staying indoors. However, a number of people yesterday (5 April) decided to throw all caution to the wind and go out.

According Malay Mail, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob revealed today (6 April) that the authorities made 554 arrests nationwide yesterday (Sunday) for defying the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“I was told by the police that the increase was due to many of you taking the opportunity to go out for the weekend seeing as yesterday was Sunday. This is against the MCO,” said Datuk Seri Ismail, during his daily Covid-19 briefing.

He stressed that the authorities will not hesitate to catch those who continue to disobey the MCO. The Senior Minister urged the members of the public to adhere to the MCO and stay indoors.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a holiday everyday, not just on the weekend. So please do not take advantage of going out on the weekends in groups,” he said, referring to the MCO.

According to the Malay Mail, out of the 554 arrested, 489 were remanded while 65 posted bail. Of those remanded, 213 were charged in courts yesterday bringing the total number of people arrested since March 18 to a whopping 6,048 arrests.

The Star highlighted that it is a 51% increase when compared to the 368 arrests recorded on Saturday (April 4).

Furthermore, the police also conducted 743 roadblocks with 25,828 vehicles inspected. The authorities have checked 4,822 premises and suburbs and conducted 25,818 surprise checks nationwide.

Experts have time and time again stated that staying indoors and being in quarantine are one of the best ways to curb the spreading of Covid-19. Going outside without proper reasoning is counterproductive in our fight against this infectious disease.
