In a recent update, The Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court ruled a four-month jail sentence for the man who abused a Nepalese security guard.

The Malaysian Penal Code under Section 324 states that injury caused by any form of a weapon will be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison, fined, whipped, or any two given punishments.

According to Harian Metro, the man pleaded guilty to the charges imposed on him by Magistrate Wong Chai Sia. His prison sentence will begin on the date of his arrest which is 3 August 2020.

With no lawyer present to represent his case, he made a plea for a lenient sentence. Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Ahmad Hakimi asked for a suitable ruling that will make sure that the defendant will not repeat his atrocious actions again.

Two weeks ago on 31 July, a viral video of a man abusing a security guard surfaced and spread across social media like wildfire. The video sparked a huge discourse regarding the mistreatment of migrant workers in Malaysia.

The upsetting 47-second video of a man ruthlessly abusing the security guard and striking him with what seemed to be a truncheon was recorded on 7 July. This caused an outrage among the Nepalese community, especially in regards to the harm and neglect of migrant workers and the lack of compassion and empathy towards them.

The Nepalese embassy here in Malaysia took immediate action to report the case to the authorities and were able to pin-point the altercation which happened in a condominium along Jalan Madrasah. This act of aggression should be neither tolerated nor condoned towards migrant workers.

Fortunately, after a deliberate search, the man was finally identified and arrested by the police.
