In his latest live address to the nation today, Malaysian Minister of Defence Datuk Sri Ismail Sabri has mentioned that the cost of quarantine for Malaysians returning home from abroad will no longer be free.

By 1st June 2020, locals returning from abroad will be mandated to fork out 50% of the cost for the compulsory 14-day long quarantine.

Foreign spouses or those with a permanent residency in Malaysia on the other hand will still have to bear 100% cost of quarantine themselves.

Before this, the government had stressed that they will only bear the cost of quarantine for locals who are returning from abroad, as reported in The Star. The previous allowance for Malaysians who will be quarantined was capped at RM150 per day, which is no longer applicable now.

From 1st July 2020 onwards, Malaysians returning home from abroad will now have to sign a consent form that stipulates the need for them to pay 50% of the quarantine cost prior to boarding their flights back home.

What do you guys think of this development?
