The Johor Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) recently managed to foil an attempt to smuggle RM18,832 worth of premium Japanese Wagyu beef from Singapore through the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB).

According to Maqis director Edie Putra Md Yusof, a 40-year-old local man had allegedly attempted to smuggle 21.4 kg of the meat in three boxes hidden in the boot of his vehicle. The meat was seized as it lacked the required import permit.

Edie Putra said all agricultural products brought into the country must have the necessary Maqis import permits.

“The smuggling attempt was foiled after Customs and Maqis enforcement officers intercepted the Malaysian-registered vehicle at 11:40 am,” he added.

“The premium beef was concealed in the rear compartment of the private vehicle.”

Meanwhile, the driver failed to produce a veterinary health certificate or halal verification documents.

Following the foiled attempt, the driver and the vehicle were detained to facilitate investigations under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

The offence is punishable under Section 11(3) of the Act, which carries a maximum penalty of RM100,000 fine and six years in jail.
