The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) shared some new data on their Facebook page, showing that in Q2 2024, the death rate for men in Malaysia was higher than for women.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin said there were 51,759 boys born compared to 48,973 girls, making the overall ratio 106 boys for every 100 girls.
There’s a 5.4% drop in death rates compared to 2023
The stats show there were 48,460 deaths in the 2nd quarter of 2024, which is a 5.4% drop from the 51,234 deaths in the same quarter last year.
Mohd Uzair also pointed out that, out of the 48,460 deaths, 27,510 were male deaths and 20,950 were female deaths, so the ratio was 131 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.
Selangor has the highest number of both live births and deaths in the 2nd quarter of 2024
Selangor tops the list with the highest number of live births at 19,320, while Labuan records the lowest with just 324 births.
While Selangor had the highest number of live births, the state also recorded the highest number of deaths, totalling 7,459 (15.4%).
On the other hand, Putrajaya has the lowest death rate with just 65 deaths (0.1%).
“The age group of 60 and over recorded the highest number of deaths, with 34,043 cases, accounting for 70.2%. This is followed by the 41-59 age group at 20.0%, the 15-40 age group at 7.6%, and the 0-14 age group at 2.1%.”
Death rates by ethnicity
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, Malays made up 52.7% of the total deaths, with 25,540 deaths, compared to 52.8% in the 2nd quarter of 2023.
Deaths among the Chinese and Indian groups dropped to 26.0% and 8.1%, respectively, from 26.1% and 8.2% in the same quarter last year.
On the other hand, deaths among other Bumiputera groups went up to 10.5%, compared to 10.2% in the same period last year.
