A total of 804 civil servants in Malaysia were caught in drug-related offences, especially drug abuse from 1 January 2021 to 30 November 2021. As reported by Kosmo!, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Razarudin Husain revealed the statistics and said that a majority of the offenders were Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers with 346 individuals being nabbed during the aforementioned period.
Meanwhile, 340 government employees were also nabbed, followed by 104 army personnels as well as 14 officers from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia.
The Deputy IGP further commented,
“I don’t deny that there are PDRM officers that are involved in drug abuse, however, the situation is not critical as it only involves 0.04% of the total 128,325 PDRM force based on a study made in the year 2020.”
“The situation is under control because their every move and activities are always being monitored closely by the Department of Integrity and Standard Compliance (JIPS), including conducting frequent urine tests,”
Furthermore, Razarudin further stressed that the statistic for the year 2021 sees a decrease in drug abuse among PDRM officers compared to the years before. A total of 2,597 officers were caught for drug-related offences within the past 6 years, including:
- 408 individuals in 2020
- 566 individuals in 2019
- 399 individuals in 2018
- 451 individuals in 2017
- 427 individuals in 2016
