One of the best parts about Hari Raya for kids is of course the much anticipated, once in a year treat – duit Raya!
In a heartwarming display of generosity, a TikTok video of a Malaysian primary school student giving away packets of duit Raya to his classmates has recently gone viral with 1.3 million views and over 96.9k likes.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, the mother of the student, Nur Athirah (Tira) said that it was her idea to give away the duit raya to her son’s classmates.
“Every year I will put aside money for my son’s friends. The intention and purpose is only for the children to have some fun after receiving the duit raya early”, she said.
On 17th April, Muhammad Amsyar, aged 7, gave each of his classmates a packet of money after a friendly salam (handshake) at a primary school in Penang.
What was even more adorable is that his classmates were all orderly lined up for the occasion as Amsyar patiently shook each friend’s hand and passed them their duit raya. Following Malay customs, the kids would either kiss Amsyar’s hand or put his hand to their heads during the salam and if a classmate didn’t do so, Amsyar would return the gesture instead.
Amsyar’s mother said that he was shy at first to give away the duit raya but was excited after it was over as all his friends were happy. Some parents also personally thanked Tira for the advanced Raya gift.
Tira said that she and her husband were shocked at first when the TikTok video went viral but soon came to terms with it as it was already posted.
“My intention was to encourage the masses to not be so calculative when doing charity during Hari Raya, if you can’t afford to give a lot, then give a little.. as long as you are sincere in giving.”
Amsyar’s parents run a ready to eat food distribution business called Dapur Berasap Hq. Check out their Instagram page @dapurberasap_hq!
