This is beyond gross!
Many of us assume hotels do their best to maintain the cleanliness of our rooms before checking in, especially when they’re popular luxury chains.
This is why so many people were shocked when staff from a few popular five-star hotels were found using extremely unsanitary cleaning methods, according to South China Morning Post.
A video that was released on Chinese social media showed these hotel cleaners using toilet brushes to clean not just toilets, but also wash basins and even plates and cups! Ewww!!!

The video soon became viral among Chinese netizens, and was later confirmed to be genuine by the municipal watchdog for hygiene, tourism, food and drug safety.
It was discovered that the cleaners worked in Sheraton, Shangri-La, and Kempinski in Harbin, northeastern China.
Cleaners who worked for the Sheraton and Kempinski hotels were recorded cleaning cups with toilet brushes and even washing towels in the toilets and then using them to wipe the floor after.
Meanwhile, a worker at the Sheraton hotel was also found cleaning a room’s toilet and sink using the same brush.
To add insult to injury, rooms at these hotels reportedly cost between 700 yuan (approx. RM440) and 2,700 yuan (approx. RM1,680) per night!
The three hotels have since been fined and were also instructed by the authorities to address the issue.
Meanwhile, Shangri-La Harbin has since released a statement on their social media addressing the incident and that they are currently investigating the situation. An excerpt from their statement reads,
“If what was shown in the video was proved to be true, it would be a serious violation of our hygiene standards and it would not be acceptable.”
“At the same time, we will also cooperate with local government to properly implement all hygiene measures.”
Well, let’s hope these hotels take more thorough measures to ensure the cleanliness of their rooms!
