Great news, girls! If you’re born between 1991 and 1996, then you are eligible for a free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) injection given by the National Population and Family Board (Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara – LPPKN).

The programme has actually been in place since 2012 and has been ongoing almost every year. This free vaccination is given to single/unmarried women who are Malaysian citizens or permanent residents of Malaysia. They must also be born between 1991 and 1996 to qualify for the programme, which you can get at 50 different branches of Klinik Nur Sejatera LPPKN nationwide.

HPV vaccine is important for us girls because this virus is the main cause of cervical cancer that is spread through sexual activity. Cervical cancer is also the third most common cancer to affect women and this vaccine helps prevent it. Quick, go get it! HPV is extremely common and while not all infections will result in cancer, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Most people do not know they are infected as there are usually no symptoms or health problems.

These are the criteria for for the free HPV programme:

  1. Malaysian citizen or permanent resident of Malaysia
  2. Born in year 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996
  3. Single and never married before
  4. Not pregnant
  5. No severe allergies or serious diseases that require immediate medical attention

Do note that the entire course requires you to take three shots and it must be completed within six months. The first and second shot will be received a month apart from each other but the last shot must be done six months after the first dose. The appointment card given to you will indicate the date that you need to go back for your following dosage for optimum coverage.

Last year, many women were rushing to take advantage of this free vaccination programme, which caused the clinics to run out of stock really fast. This year, LPPKN announced that there will be only 27,000 doses available and it will be given out on a first come first serve basis. Better be quick if you want the HPV jab!

Contact your nearest Klinik Nur Sejahtera for more information.

Prevention is better than cure, ladies. Get vaccinated (even if you have to pay for it)!
