The Federal Highway has unfortunately seen quite a number of dangerous and fatal accidents. However, these recent accidents have been cause for concern among thousands of drivers using this highway.

At around 12.55am this morning (19th February), Fathurezza Khoirul Huda Halimsuyto, 31, and Noor Hidayah Mohamed Rezmi, 27, who were travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Shah Alam, lost control of their vehicle and crashed into one of the pillars of the currently unused Batu Tiga toll plaza. They reportedly died at the scene, according to the Malay Mail Online.

“Both victims were believed to be on their way home from celebrating Noor Hidayah’s birthday, which was on Feb 18, yesterday,” Shah Alam district police chief ACP Baharudin Mat Taib told the daily.

“Fathurezza Khoirul Huda and Noor Hidayah were confirmed dead at the scene due to severe injuries on several parts of the body and the front part of the car was wrecked.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first time something horrific like this has happened. Earlier in January at around 6.30am, 21-year-old Muhammad Azki Dahlan Jamit and 20-year-old Norsya’Baniah Norhisham were also killed when their car skidded and crashed into one of the booths at the Batu Tiga Toll. The driver however, made it out alive but sustained serious injuries.

These fatal accidents that took place after the toll was abolished at the Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau tolls have raised some concerns among Malaysian commuters in the Klang Valley.

Many of them expressed their frustration with how long it is taking for the tolls to be demolished, while others pointed out that no warning signs were placed on the road to notify commuters approaching the toll.

However, a number of Malaysians also noted that driving responsibly on the road is another huge factor that can prevent such tragic accidents from occurring in the first place.

According to a report by the Malay Mail Online published in January, PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) was in the process of appointing a contractor to demolish the unused tolls, but recent reports have stated that demolitions will only be carried out in late March.

In the meantime, we advise everyone to drive carefully especially during odd hours. Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased and hope that no more fatal accidents occur as a result of this issue.
